The Richmond Hill Small Business Enterprise Centre (SBEC) is celebrating Small Business Week with a series of exciting events to be held from October 19 - 25, 2024.  

This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the resilience, innovation, and contributions of small businesses within our community. This week-long event provides a platform for entrepreneurs to connect, learn, and grow through a series of workshops, webinars, and networking sessions. Our goal is to empower small business owners with the tools, resources, and insights needed to navigate challenges and seize opportunities in today’s dynamic economic landscape.

As we bring together industry experts, government representatives, and local business leaders, Small Business Week serves as a catalyst for fostering collaboration and driving the success of small enterprises.

Session Details and Registrations

Marketplace for Small Businesses (in-person) - Saturday, October 19, 1 – 4 p.m. 

Kick off Small Business Week at the library! Shop and support our curated vendors while connecting with small businesses. Interested in starting your own business? Come and speak to the Richmond Hill Small Business Enterprise Centre representatives to give you step-by-step process to start your small business. 

This program will take place at the Richmond Hill Public Library, Central branch at 1 Atkinson Street in the Events Room on the third floor. No registration required. 

Teen Community Leaders Program (in-person) - Monday, October 21, 4 - 5:30 p.m. 

In the fall session of Richmond Hill Public Library’s Teen Community Leaders program, make meaningful contributions to your community and develop leadership skills alongside other teens. 

Small Business Consultant, Alan Luk will present the Summer Company Program for aspiring youth entrepreneurs. The event will also give an opportunity to meet with Alumni and Grant Recipients from the Program.

Import Export Webinar (virtual) - Tuesday October 22, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Topic: From Local to Global: Expanding Your Small Business through Import and Export

Speakers: 

  • Sue Rauth – Director, Ontario Regional Office (ROONT) – Trade Commissioner Service (TCS), Global Affairs Canada
  • Debbie Bermudez – Senior Program Officer, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)

 

Time: 10 – 11 a.m.

Topic: Exporting Session: Getting Started with Exporting: Tools and resources to begin to think Global

 

This comprehensive session will help scene set and equip small businesses with some tools and knowledge needed to embark on exporting. It will cover key considerations for assessing export readiness and understand the myriad resources and supports available to pave the way for successful entry into global markets.

 

Time: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Topic: Navigating Import Regulations, Procedures, and Documentation

 

This session will provide an in-depth overview of the key regulations and compliance requirements set by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) for importing goods. Entrepreneurs will learn about the essential documentation needed for customs clearance and will be guided through the step-by-step process of importing goods into Canada. The session will also highlight common compliance pitfalls and offer practical advice on how to avoid them, ensuring a smooth and efficient import process.

Entrepreneurship Finance Conference (virtual) - Thursday, October 24, 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

This virtual event will provide entrepreneurs of all backgrounds an opportunity to improve their knowledge and relationship with capital and financial resources through highly interactive sessions, conversations and professional advice.  Aspiring entrepreneurs across sectors will be able to:

  • Connect to the sources of capital available through the federal and provincial governments, as well as banks, angel investors, incubators, accelerators, and other financial institutions
  • Learn from finance industry experts, government representatives and service providers
  • Network with other like-minded entrepreneurs through the virtual conference platform and learn how to grow their business from their experience
