More in this Section...

A fire in an office or store can be devastating to a community. In addition to potential injuries, deaths and property loss, people may lose their jobs and the community may lose a vital service provided by the business. The best way to protect your employees, your property and the environment is to prevent a fire from happening.  Many causes of office and store fires are the same as for home fires. Prevention and escape planning recommendations are similar.

Richmond Hill Fire & Emergency Services wants to ensure that our business community is, safe and is happy to support your fire safety efforts. Workplace fire prevention and life safety programs are available for businesses with 10 or more employees. Programs cover safety topics such as:

  • How to prevent fire in your workplace
  • Emergency procedures when there's a fire
  • What to do if you find a fire
  • Responsibilities of staff when there's an emergency
  • Evacuation techniques and procedures
  • When and how to use a fire extinguisher
  • Carbon monoxide awareness
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Home fire safety

Contact us to learn more or to arrange a workplace safety presentation.

Employee Safety Tips

Employees should try to eliminate fire hazards in the workplace:

  • Check for damaged or overloaded electrical outlets, cords and cables
  • Keep anything that can burn away from electrical equipment
  • Never leave portable heating devices unattended
  • Keep workspace and equipment clean, dry and well ventilated
  • Never leave cooking unattended
  • Practice good house-keeping
  • Remove any obstacles from exits
  • Ensure proper use of electrical equipment, and maintenance of equipment and machinery
  • Plan and practice multiple escape routes in case one is blocked
  • Participate in fire drills and training sessions
Employers Need to Prepare for Emergencies

Employers should train employees about fire hazards in the workplace and what to do in a fire emergency. As an employer, you should:

  • Make sure smoke alarms, fire sprinklers, fire alarms and other fire safety equipment are properly installed and working
  • Post clear fire escape plans
  • Conduct regular fire drills and fire inspections
  • Teach employees about:
    • Preventive measures

    • Inspection techniques

    • Fire extinguisher use

    • Hazard reporting

    • Spill control procedures

    • Emergency procedures and fire drills

    • Fire protection equipment

Fire Safety Inspections
Establish a regular schedule of fire inspections. These will help detect any deviations from, or shortcomings in, your control standards and emergency procedures. Take corrective action as soon as possible.

The Ontario Fire Code and Ontario Building Code specify fire safety measures for many workplace establishments. Richmond Hill Fire & Emergency Services’ Fire Prevention Division conducts both routine and complaint inspections in accordance with applicable legislation. Ensure you are aware of the requirements that apply to your place or business.

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety also has resources available to assist you in the development of fire protection measures.

Fire Safety Plans

A fire safety plan is a detailed document that covers all aspects of fire safety for a specific building or property. The plan will include items such as:

  • Emergency procedures to be used in case of fire.
  • How, and how often fire drills will be conducted.
  • Information for any designated staff who have been given fire safety duties and responsibilities.
  • Organization, education, and training for staff with fire safety duties.
  • Information and actions to take to prevent or control fire hazards for that building or business, where appropriate.
  • Detailed maintenance procedures for fire protection systems.
  • Diagrams and instructions about the type, location, and operation of any fire or emergency systems.
  • Identification of alternative fire safety measures.

In Ontario, the requirement for a fire safety plan is specified in the Ontario Fire Code.

Portable Fire Extinguishers

The requirement for installation and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers within buildings in Ontario is regulated by the Ontario Building Code and Ontario Fire Code. Ensure you are aware of the requirements that apply to your place or business.

If you expect your workers to use firefighting equipment, you should give them appropriate equipment and train them annually to use the equipment safely. We are happy to offer fire extinguisher training to local businesses upon request.
